David Humphreys tintype
David Humphreys is an artist and photographer in Asheville NC. I like to make interesting photographs. The main focus of my current work is in Wet Plate Collodion Photography. I work with vintage Large Format 4x5 up to 14x17 inch plate cameras. On occasion I work with 35mm, Polaroid, and Holga film cameras. I make and shoot pinhole film cameras and work in other media, including original printmaking, painting, papermaking, digital, and photoshop. My studio is in Asheville.
About 30 years ago I decided to take a black and white darkroom class at a local community collage and I was hooked. I made a lot of black and white fine art silver prints at that time. My photo class instructor, a wedding photographer, suggested that I should photograph weddings. I had never had an interest in that form of photography but I gave it a chance in my own style, mixing black and white candid art shots with the more standard wedding list of must have color shots. I photographed weddings with heavy, bulky, medium format cameras for ten years, and that was enough! I bought a digital camera and learned to be fairly proficient at photoshop but I did not do a lot of photography for a period. A few years ago I started noticing some interesting and unusual images on the interweb that had an aesthetic like nothing I was familiar with. These distinctive "wet plate" tintypes and ambrotypes had tremendous appeal to me, so about eight years ago I researched, gathered equipment, chemicals, watched videos, and had a half a day's instruction. There is a long learning curve for this 1850's process but here I am. I hope you share my love of this medium and enjoy my work.
I am always open to trades and collaboration with the exceptional muse.
